'All Electric' equipment models from Bobcat EMEA and Komatsu Europe at bauma 2022 showcased innovative components and controls from Moog Inc.'s new Moog Construction Division.
To find out more, Peter Haddock caught up with George Small, Chief Technology Officer of Moog Inc.
George: "In January 2022, we launched our new Moog Construction Division to support the wider electrification of plant and equipment. Having worked in the sector for over 30 years, we felt now was the time to deliver a more tailored solution, using our tried and tested components and software that our aerospace and industrial sector customers are already benefitting from.
"Partnering last year with both Komatsu Construction (for its prototype wheel loader) and Bobcat Company for its (T7X All-Electric Compact Track Loader) we have been able to replace numerous components associated with diesel powered equipment with our intelligent machine electrification system.
“It includes an electric traction motor, lift, tilt and steering electric cylinders, power electronics, a system control computer, battery, and battery management solution.
“This approach is designed to support every step of the electrification journey. And when OEMs like Bobcat and Komatsu want to go All Electric, they can even remove hydraulic fluids and associated losses from the machines.
“In fact, we are able to dramatically reduce the parts count with some components also able to operate for the entire life of the machine. This, in turn, can lead to reduced maintenance costs.”
We think it’s great to see Moog coming into our sector with all its knowledge from the aerospace industry in particular, and Peter hopes to see more from the team in the future as the All Electric vision becomes a reality.
