(23 May 1960) The great dam which is higher than St. Paul's Cathedral, and nearly two thousand feet long, has triumphed over all difficulties. Several thousand people had assembled for the very big event: the official opening. This was performed by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was accompanied by Sir Roy Welensky (the Federal Prime Minister). Her Majesty must have been impressed by this tremendous feat of engineering. It had been completed by the joint labours of Europeans and Africans, at a cost of about 120 million pounds. It had taken 5 years to build. The opening was the climax of a great project, that will bring lasting benefit to all people of the country.
