The Denguru or shaman drum is the spirit horse, and traveling vehicle of the shaman, Taking him or her on journies between worlds, in the quest for knowledge healing resources, and magic .with wich to heal the sick, restore harmony in the spirit world and to rebalance the earth. The Denguru is said to consist of 13 brothers 12 parts making up the drum and the shaman as the 13th element. The body of the drum is usually made of chestnut split lengthways along the grain and steamed into a circular or oval-shaped drum, attached to this is a long Phurba. Handle intricately carved to express the Tripple world, lower world with Tripple blades carved with naga snake gods, suns stars and moons, Middle world as unlimited energy expressed as a vajra unifying all opposites and uniting the polarities in 2 never-ending knots, and upper world expressed as 3gods connected to the Hindu trinity, or to Buddhist deities, and to the nature gods of rivers mountains and forests. The empty space inside the drum is seen as the void and this emptiness runs inside the phurba Handel, expressing the unity of form and formlessness and of time and timelessness. The 2 sides of the drum are skinned with a male and a female animal usually a dear skin on older drums but often domestic coat skins on more modern drums. Each drum skin is wrapped over. a circular hoop made of cane, and is tightly bound to the frame using strips of a special type of bamboo, or occasionally Ratan vine if the bamboo cant is found. Inside the drum are three or more magical objects, a stone or amulet from a site sacred to the shaman. a piece of rock crystal usually quartz but occasionally tourmaline or another type of crystal, a piece of copper, often a small copper coin, representing the blood of shiva, and quite often a Rudraksha seed, These rattle and give energy and added spirit to the drum, The Long carved phurba handle is bound to the frame and fastened internally with a wooden peg. The Drum is usually played with a curved wooden stick representing a snake or naga god, which is made from t type oof Thorney shrub that grows close to water. The drum skins are seen as sacred arena and are often painted with magical symbols Trishals or Shivic tridents representing the energy channels in the body, suns, and moons or with, mantra, most commonly with the OM signs. The bamboo bindings often carry flowers and plants sacred to the shaman Because of the long Phurba handle Denguru are very ergonomic and comfortable to play, the handle can be tucked into the hip bone or rested on the ground in front of the shaman, and is also used as a magical wand to direct energy into the person being healed, or to draw out illness that is then released into the ground. Denguru shaman drums are very sacred, so they are usually stored in the roof space of the shaman often over the alter or ancestral fire pit, when resting on the ground they are placed on their edge never face down. They are treated with the utmost respect as a living being assisting the shaman's life path and journey.
