Traditional concrete dates all the way back to the Roman Empire. To bring the material to the 21st century, a team of researchers has redesigned the material to make the concrete self-sensing and energy-generating. Eventually, the metamaterial concrete will be able to monitor building damage, power roadside sensors, and help self-driving cars navigate highways.
