This session in the Starting a Nonprofit: The Four Fundamental Steps Series was designed to help participants navigate the creation of a mission-based organization.
Topics include how to define cause, conduct market analysis, create a mission and scope of work, and choose a structure and type of nonprofit.
Additionally, this session addresses the nonprofit organizational lifecycle and provides valuable and practical advice on initial planning, strategy, and compliance while covering the incorporation process -- including how to apply for, obtain, and maintain IRS tax exempt status.

Columbia’s Master of Science in Nonprofit Management prepares graduates for leadership roles within mission-driven organizations in a wide variety of contexts, including global and community nonprofits, foundations, education, healthcare, and the arts, or as fundraising and development experts. The program reflects the growth and increased sophistication of the nonprofit sector, as well as the need for nonprofit organizations to demonstrate impact more effectively.
