During the American Civil War, there were a number of men on each side who committed war crimes. But one man who was the Commandant of Camp Sumter, a terrible prisoner of war camp was Henry Wirz. Wirz was a Swiss man who fought for the Confederates but he would oversee Camp Sumter, where up to 3000 prisoners were dying each month. The conditions here were awful and there was a lack of food and disease was rife at the site. But more inmates were being sent to the camp, but then Henry Wirz was later arrested and was tried for the crimes of Camp Sumter.
A military tribunal found Henry Wirz guilty of a number of offences and he was sentenced to death. His camp had resulted in the deaths of 12,000 people and he was brought to the gallows inside the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC. In front of a crowd of around 250 people he was executed on the gallows.
