An AED delivers an electrical shock to the heart if it is needed. Some of the people in cardiac arrest have an uncontrolled heart rhythm which can only be reset to normal by using an electrical shock. The AED measures and analyzes the heart rhythm and only if this uncontrolled rhythm is detected the AED will give a shock.
