NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană at the virtual signing of the Memorandum Of Understanding for the NATO Flight Training Europe (NFTE) initiative, 9 June 2021.
In the run up to the NATO Summit the Defence Ministers of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Spain, and Turkey signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday 9 June 2021 to establish the NATO Flight Training Europe (NFTE) architecture. NFTE will allow the participants to integrate and address the training requirements for all of their aircrews, including fighter jet, helicopter, and transport pilots, as well as personnel who remotely pilot unmanned aircraft.
Through NATO’s NFTE multinational High Visibility Project the participants will gradually create a network of NFTE Training Campuses, which cater toward different aspects and types of aircrew training. This flexible NFTE architecture will provide participants over time access to a comprehensive range of training opportunities beyond what most Allies could sustain independently, at a fraction of the cost. This cost effectiveness is further increased by building as much as possible on existing training infrastructures.
“NATO troops operate and deploy together. As such, it is just logical that they also systematically prepare and train together” highlighted Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană the significant positive interoperability implications of NFTE.
The operational core of NFTE is a carefully crafted mechanism that captures participants’ contributions and services received. Its design incentivizes continuous investment by the participants in enhancing NFTE training solutions. “By ensuring perpetual investments in training our aircrews in the best way possible NFTE is delivering an important puzzle piece to help the Alliance maintain its technological and military edge,” commented Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană on this particular aspect.
