EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK: the ultimate guide - Let’s start with the difficulty of the Everest base camp trek.
Trekking to Everest Base Camp takes some serious effort. It will be one of the most challenging trips you will be doing in your life for the first time. But, you don’t need to be in great shape to complete the journey. The main key is to go slow at your own pace to make a successful trek. In fact, going slow will help you to acclimatize better. Keep in mind that you are not in a race or competition.
Having said all of that you should be able to walk 10-15 km in a day. You have to be able to walk up the intense inclines some days. It’s hard to measure if you are ready for this trek. In my 20-plus years of guiding career, there were people on the trail who were overweight and going really slow but they were right there with us at base camp to celebrate the achievement. More important is being positive and getting yourself mentally prepared, you can do it.
EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK DISTANCE
The distance from Lukla to Everest Base Camp is 39 miles or 62 kilometers. Most people take 8-9 days trekking to Everest Base Camp and 3-4 days trekking back to Lukla.
The highest point on the trek is 5640 m Kala Patthar, which you will hike to in the morning after reaching Everest Base Camp. This is where you get the best views of Mount Everest. And Everest base camp itself is located at an altitude of 5364 m.
BEST TIME for Everest base camp trek?
This is an interesting question. Do you want snow, reliable weather or to get away from crazy crowds?
The months of March to May – Peak season, clear bright days, very busy trails, lots of people attempting Everest ascent too. Weather-wise a great time.
June to August – Monsoon season, no crowds and empty guesthouses. Peaceful, clouds and rain.
September to October – Most stable and clear weather, trails are quite busy.
November to December – Temperature drops but perfect weather conditions, less crowd, and best months to do the trek.
I suggest you to avoid the months of April and October as they will get crazily crowded. 10,000 plus trekkers will trek to Everest base camp in April and an even higher number of trekkers in October.
EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK: WIFI/ELECTRICITY AVAILABILITY.
Wi-Fi is available throughout the trek and it Costs anywhere from $3 to $5 to use Wi-Fi at the guesthouses. Buy a Ncell Simcard before you start the trek. Ncell works on half of the trekking trail.
Electricity: You will have to pay anywhere from $5 at lower elevations to $10 at higher elevations to charge your power banks, cameras, and phones. The key is to get your own power bank and Pay to charge that, then charge everything from your power bank.
HOW TO FIND THE BEST AGENCY?
There are 1000s of trekking agencies that are looking for organizing the Everest base camp trek. I know it’s hard to pick the right one. The best way to find the right company is through recommendations from your friends or relatives. If you don’t have any recommendations, check the feedback of the trekking organizer, and compare prices and services with several companies, while you are talking with them about your trip plan you will get to know which one to pick.
By the way, you may try to contact me as well, I started as a porter in 1996, guiding from 1999, and started my own company in 2008. So with this long experience, I and my team know how to provide the best service and make it the happening trip of a lifetime for all our clients.
The trek costs around USD 1200 to 3000 USD. It depends on who you will go with and what kind of services you are looking for. Of course, if you go with the international company it will cost more as they have some profit margin too. But all the services you are provided on the trek are by the local company in Nepal.
HOW TO TREK TO EVEREST BASE CAMP
You have a few different options depending on your experience and requirements on how to trek to Everest base camp.
Book a package through an agency
Do the trek independently (not with an agency) but still hire a guide or porter
Do the entire Everest Base Camp Trek independently
I suggest going with a small group of friends would be a great idea than joining the bigger groups. We organize mostly private treks even for a single person, trekking solo with a guide is far better than joining a bigger group. It’s your trip, you take your time and enjoy the trip.
