Ayushman Bharat Scheme: Fifty-four patients allegedly duped in the first three months of this year, Rs 2.7 crore collected from mostly poor families over two years, and a nexus of middlemen and companies to route the money – this is what transpired at Safdarjung Hospital, one India’s largest and busiest medical institutes run by the Centre, as a neurosurgeon’s alleged crimes flew under the radar. Official records and probe documents accessed by The Indian Express throw light on how Dr Manish Rawat, associate professor at the Department of Neurosurgery, allegedly exploited patients' limited knowledge and engaged in unlawful practices by overcharging for medical implants that were either supposed to be free or covered under the Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat scheme.
