Brookline firefighters go above the call of duty for brotherhood
Brookline, Massachusetts
It's called the brotherhood, and its a fraternity not taken lightly.
When Brookline's Fire Department lost a lieutenant who had spent years putting his life on the line they came together to do something that many would consider unexpected.
"This is what firefighters do for each other,” Sean Fields said.
Sean knows that well. He's a firefighter and the son of Lt. Kenneth fields. He grew up, watching the 25-year career of his father and several years ago he started working alongside him.
On the day after Christmas last year, Lt. Fields lost his battle to stomach cancer, what firefighters describe as occupational cancer. That could have been the end of the story, or at least that could have been in another occupation.
This winter did a number on the home of Lt. Fields' widow. This weekend almost two dozen firefighters took to the rafters and repaired the roof.
When you ask any of them why they will all give you the same answer; "I hate to keep saying it, and people overuse it, but it's the brotherhood, taking care of each other,” Sean said.
Each other and each other's families. Sean said he knows the significance is not lost on his mom.
