🏋️♀️The problem with most exercises that strengthen the hip flexors is that they focus on building strength in the hip flexor when it is shortened. However, the hip flexor does not spend all of its time in this position. We need to train the hip flexor to have strength when it's in a lengthened position as well.
💪Training the hip flexors in their lengthened position can be achieved by lengthening the hip flexor while putting it under some kind of load, including your body weight. A great exercise for this is the split squat, which is like a lunge but with your back leg extended. This puts the hip flexor in a lengthened position under a good amount of load, making it great for mobility and strength.
🦵The version of the split squat on the floor can be quite difficult, so if needed, you can elevate the front foot to make it easier on your ankles. You can also grab hold of something to keep your balance. Start by holding the position and gradually increase the movement as your strength and mobility improve.
