During a technical briefing in Ottawa on Tuesday, Canadian government officials urged Canadians in Lebanon to avoid the southern region and leave the country while commercial flights are still available, as instability in the Middle East continues to mount.
“The best advice we can give Canadians right now is to take actions to to prevent themselves [from] being in a situation that could deteriorate rapidly. So that is why we are emphasizing the importance of the travel advice. it's crucial that Canadians watch that,” said Julie Sunday, assistant deputy foreign affairs minister for consular, security and emergency management.
Officials added that the number of Canadians looking to leave Israel is going down, with more than 1,300 people having already been evacuated. Two more evacuations flights are scheduled to depart on Tuesday and non-essential canadian government staff and their families have left the region.
In Gaza, around 200 Canadians have reached out for help leaving, and that number is growing. Before the briefing, an explosion destroyed the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, killing hundreds of people.
