Scruggs wrote it and played five-string banjo in this original recorded version of the bluegrass standard.. The piece attracted major new mainstream attention when featured prominently in the 1967 box office hit “Bonnie And Clyde,” at which time Flatt & Scruggs recorded a new version for Columbia while Mercury reissued the original on a 45 under the title “Theme From Bonnie & Clyde (Foggy Mountain Breakdown).”
The original 78rpm single was issued on Mercury 6247 - Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Earl Scruggs) by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, recorded December 11, 1949
