Cincinnati Children’s is a world leader in neonatal care.
As a fellow here, you will work alongside some of the best minds in the field and care for some of the most fragile babies.
Kristin Melton, MD, Fellowship Program Director: “I would say the breadth of choices here at Cincinnati Children’s is what makes this a fantastic place to train.”
You’ll get clinical experience at three of the city’s Newborn Intensive Care Units, as well as our Fetal Care Center, which treats some of the most complex patients in the country.
One of our goals is to find out what you’re passionate about and help you on that path for your long-term career.
Jae Kim, MD, PhD, Director, Division of Neonatology: “People here are very accommodating, and the culture of collaboration within the hospital and academic environment is second to none.”
John Erickson, MD, PhD, Neonatology Fellow: “The program here is excellent as far as balancing clinical skills and scientific research. I came from a pretty strong scientific background and was ready to kind of hit the ground running as far as research goes. And the program is very accommodating as far as getting me lined up with a mentor, started in the lab early, getting as productive as possible on my project. All of that is at the same time as balancing a very demanding clinical load.”
We look for fellows who want to answer the great questions that still remain about the development and disorders of newborns.
Shawn Ahlfeld, MD, Associate Fellowship Program Director: “Our goal is really to produce academic neonatologists that are going to want to go out and be very competitive for any job they desire.”
Amy Nathan, MD, Medical Director, Perinatal Institute: “There’s a very collaborative relationship between the faculty and the fellows. Our units depend on the fellows, we trust the fellows. They have a large amount of autonomy. But we also provide very consistent supervision and feedback to them as well.”
We take the feedback of fellows each year and make improvements. One change is our style of education and empowering fellows to be educators themselves.
Jenn Brady, MD, Neonatology Faculty: “We have a large emphasis on simulations. We’ve also restructured the lectures that the fellows receive. So we are shortening those lectures. Most of our lectures now, specific to the fellows, are on a 40-minute time block. We also try to incorporate more active learning – so participation with the fellows, fellows trying to do some things on their own before they come to the lecture so they get there ready to learn.”
Maradith Skalak, MD, Neonatology Fellow: “All of the units are very fellow-led. So, everything goes through the fellows – any decision-making, any procedures. Most of the patient care is going to go through the fellow before you talk to the attending. So, you’re kind of learning how to take care of patients, you’re teaching providers how to take care of patients and kind of developing your management style learning how to be an attending.”
You’ll go along on transports and learn to manage patients in the field. We’ll stretch you and push you in ways that will advance your career.
Dr. Skalak: “That transition from being scared to being confident and comfortable, it happens without you realizing it. Then you can kind of look back and be like, ‘Wow, I’ve been through a lot. I’ve handled a lot, I kind of feel like I can do anything.”
During a fellowship here, we’ll come to feel like family.
Jacqueline Hawkins, Program Coordinator: “The fellows, when they’re coming into the program, I work with them the entire process, and make sure that they are set up and have everything they need when they get here. And for applicants that are interested in our program, they can call me at any time. They can email me if they have questions or they want to connect with certain faculty members. And I can make that happen for them.”
Dr. Melton: We really appreciate your interest in the fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s. We hope that you’ll come take a look and get to understand the opportunities.
