History
In the 1950s, the colonization of the municipality of Paragominas was carried out by peasants, who arrived in the region, before the construction of the Belém-Brasília highway . In 1958, precisely with the explorer Ariston Alves da Silva , when he crossed the Capim basin and established the first rice plantation . [ 5 ] Followed by colonizing companies: Colonizadora Belém Brasília, Colonizadora Marajoara and Cidade Marajoara, which were unsuccessful.
Later, the federal government disclosed the installation of a federal colony in the region, which was never established, as well as state plans for the formation of two colonies in that territory.
It is also recorded that even before the arrival of the peasants, with authorization from the State Government, businessmen from Goiás had penetrated into the forest, along the capim river, with the objective of carrying out surveys and titling land for buyers from Uberaba , in Minas Gerais , and Itumbiara , in Goiás.
Later, the proximity of the Belém-Brasília road provoked a great demand for the land among landowners from Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo , in addition to land speculation companies from São Paulo, at the same time that peasants penetrated into lands in the region, with the aim of to face competition with the “grileiros”, who issued false titles and secured them through the use of force.
There was a rapid concentration of property, in this climate of violence, and attempts at colonization failed.
The municipality obtained autonomy in 1965, during the government of Jarbas Passarinho , with Law nº 3.235, of January 4, formed with an area dismembered from part of the district of São Domingos do Capim and part of the district of Camiranga, which belonged to the Municipality of Viseu .
On May 10, 1988, through Law nº 5 450, in the Hélio Gueiros government , its area was dismembered to create the Municipality of Dom Eliseu , an old town called Felinto Muller, which was elevated to the status of a district.
The first mayor of Paragominas was Amílcar Batista Tocantins, appointed by the federal government. The name of the city is the abbreviation of the names of three states: Pará, Goiás and Minas Gerais.
In the 1990s and even at the beginning of the 21st century, the municipality also attracted a significant number of immigrants from the south, some of whom were entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector and many unemployed people who were looking for a better life with jobs and a low cost of living.
