Whenever I’m packing for a motorcycle trip, I’m always careful not to recreate the life that I’m trying to escape. A great friend of mine once said, either go, or stay. But don’t do both. Don’t go wishing you had stayed, and don’t stay wishing you had gone. So for me, I don’t bring all of the day-to-day life with me on a trip. Instead, I leave open space. Empty places. Because that’s where adventure is for me. Every great adventure story that I’ve fallen in love with has three things: a man, a knife, and a fire. So for me, I always bring my favorite knife and the ability to make a fire.

Some people say adventure lives in the soul. If that’s true, it’s our intentional actions that breathe life into it. That intentional action for me is leaving things undone. Leaving things unplanned. Because it’s always those empty places, those open places, that adventure seems to fall into.
