STORYLINE:
US Secretary of State Colin Powell pledged support for Haiti's interim government on Wednesday, and said the government was "looking hard" for new money to bolster the Caribbean island nation's fragile economy.
Powell was talking to press after meeting with Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue, currently in Washington for a series of meetings with US government and international aid officials.
Latortue said economic aid was critical to establishing democracy, as unemployment was "at the root" of most of the recent unrest.
Later in the day Latortue addressed a conference of Latin American businessmen at the US Chamber of Commerce.
In his speech, the Prime Minister said that he plans to clamp down on corruption, and encourage more international investment in Haiti by following the Dominican Republic's example of economic development.
