Evictions in America are expected to skyrocket now that the moratorium has ended. At least 11 million people are currently behind on their rent payments and they will soon face evictions from their home.
Unfortunately, Democratic lawmakers weren’t able to get enough votes to extend the ban on evictions for nonpayment of rent, which the CDC imposed last September. The moratorium recently expired on July 31, 2021.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi suggested that state and local governments release the $46.5 billion in rental assistance in order to prevent families from being evicted. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin agreed with Pelosi’s advice. Under pressure, landlords are now getting ready to serve eviction notices to tenants.
