STORYLINE:
New clashes erupted on Monday between anti-monarch protesters and security forces in Nepal''s capital, as police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and beat protests.
Demonstrators staged rallies across Katmandu to demand that Nepal''s king to relinquish control over the government, while most residents spent a third day under government curfew.
The Himalayan nation''s long-simmering crisis has deepened in recent days, with mobs rampaging in cities throughout the country as security forces try to crackdown on dissenters.
On Sunday, three people were killed in clashes, and some 800 arrested, mostly without charge.
The demonstrations were part of a four-day strike called by the seven main political parties to demand that King Gyanendra, who seized power last year, step down and restore democracy.
Neither side has shown willingness to back down, and the royal government said it may have to use even more force to restore order, alleging that Maoist rebels had infiltrated political protests and fired on security forces over the weekend.
One woman protester was beaten as she chanted anti-monarchy slogans.
Earlier, an AP Television News crew filmed a nine-year-old child being escorted to safety by a human rights activist in Katmandu''s Gangabhu district.
The boy, Saroj Pudasani, who was bleeding severely said; "I did not do anything, still the police beat me up."
Thousands of youth have hurled bricks and stones at police, injuring many, prompting Nepalese Information Minister Srish Shumshere Rana to call them "hooligans."
The government had imposed an almost round-the-clock curfew in Katmandu over the weekend, and extended it to Monday, but with reduced hours.
Day curfews also continued in the towns of Pokhara and Bharatpur.
Saturday was the anniversary of the introduction of democracy in Nepal 16 years ago when dozens of pro-democracy protesters were shot by police, boosting anti-royal sentiment and forcing the late king Birendra to yield much of his authority.
