Composed in 1948, the set consists of six Preludes. There is fervent lyricism in the first prelude. The second projects an idyllic melody. The next prelude expresses lament. The fourth prelude requires a virtuoso technique. The fifth features an extended passionate euphony. The last requires bravura and a musical perception. The series tests the technical, tonal, harmonic, rhythmic, lyrical, and percussive capabilities of the piano.
