A fuel filter is responsible for capturing rust, dirt and other contaminants. Although most modern vehicles have the fuel filter built into the fuel pump, you'll find inline fuel filters on older fuel injected and carburetor equipped vehicles. The replacement interval varies widely depending on your vehicle. You'll often find replacement intervals in the owner's manual. For example, older fuel injected vehicles require the fuel filter to be replaced every 2 years or 30k miles. Later models may require fuel filter replacement every 50k miles or more. (Carburetor equipped vehicles require fuel filter replacements more often than fuel injected vehicles.)
