He explains that sometimes the cancer is located near the tail of the pancreas, which is adjacent to the spleen. In such cases, surgeons often remove the spleen along with the tail of the pancreas due to the risk of microscopic cancer spread.
This proximity necessitates the removal of both organs to ensure the cancer is thoroughly eliminated. However, if the cancer is located in the middle of the pancreas, surgeons may be able to preserve the spleen and only remove the affected part of the pancreas.
Dr. Baljekar highlights the spleen's vital role in filtering blood and destroying disease-causing agents, making it a crucial consideration in pancreatic cancer surgeries.
