British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said Thursday the U.K.'s lockdown measures would stay in place "until we've got the evidence that clearly shows we've moved beyond the peak."
He also reported a total of 65,077 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 7,978 deaths, up 881 on Wednesday.
The number of new deaths is lower than in the previous 24 hours, in which 938 deaths were recorded.
Britain’s death toll is close to the daily peaks recorded in Italy and Spain, the two countries with the highest number of COVID-19 deaths.
Italy recorded a high of 969 deaths on March 27 and Spain 950 deaths on April 2.
The figures may not be directly comparable, however. Not all the UK deaths reported each day occurred in the preceding 24 hours, and the total only includes deaths in hospitals.
Ahead of the Easter bank holiday weekend, Raab said it was not yet time to ease the country's lockdown restrictions.
"We're not done yet. We must keep going."
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as a fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and can be fatal.
