Hi everyone! Clubhouse has had an interesting ride in 2020 and 2021. First, they were hyped as one of the new media giants. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, the Robinhood CEO and many others used the app which led to viral videos of the interactions. What I didn't realise is that the company only had 8 employees at that time! I hope this interview and summary are enjoyable.
And here are some summaries:
- Alpha Exploration Co. (operating under the name Clubhouse): Founded in 2020. Reached a $4B valuation in 2021. Founded by Paul Davison, Rohan Seth.
- Clubhouse: Active name but no trademark (got sued for Trademark infringement).
- Paul Davison: Co-Founder and CEO of Clubhouse.
- Competitors: Discord Stage Channels, Facebook Live Audio Rooms, Reddit Talk, Slack Huddles, Spotify Greenroom, Telegram Voice Chats, and Twitter Spaces, Amazon "Project Mic" (also via Twitch).
- Major issues: Lack of content curation. Difficult monetization. Less relevant post-pandemic. Too many new competitors. Bad audio quality (due to phone use). Echochambers and abusive discussions.
