In exciting news from the Consumer Electronics Show this week, Sony and Honda have teamed up to unveil an electric car prototype. The car, released under the newly launched Afeela brand, a joint venture between Sony Honda Mobility, is an electric sedan that has been designed to prioritize entertainment and interaction.
The Afeela features interfaces developed by Epic Games and screens for movies, games, and "infotainment" fitted to both the interior and exterior of the car. Sony Honda Mobility plans to integrate the car into the Metaverse for enhanced entertainment, and the Epic Games integration will further enhance the driving experience. In addition, the car will feature augmented reality navigation and a Level 3 autonomous system. the backseat passengers in this car will have a luxurious experience thanks to the dual screens and ambient lighting. Qualcomm's 5G System-on-Chip Snapdragon digital integration will be used to bring all of these advanced technologies together.
Sony Honda Mobility has also included a combined 45 cameras and sensors in and around the Afeela for advanced driver-assist functions, all in consideration of the Level 3 autonomy and driver support.
As for the technology included in the Afeela, Sony has packed it with a range of features. One standout is the display running the width of the interior, with digital side mirror displays at each end. There is also a large instrument panel and an infotainment display to the right. The lack of buttons and switches suggests that voice commands will play a significant role in the Afeela's high-tech offerings.
