On my way to Hallstatt from Salzburg, I have made a quick sneak at Austria's hidden gem - the colorful Bad Ischl. It was an opportune time to quickly leave the train tracks and see what was once dubbed "heaven on earth" as Franz Joseph I of Austria said. It doesn't disappoint even if the name of this little hamlet starts with Bad.
But in Austria, when a place is prefixed with Bad, it's actually good - bad being a description that distinguishes the place of being a spa town. This charming little place is a resort haven in Salzkammergut region. Featured here is the idyllic town center along the church street upon the Traun river.
The beauty and serenity of the current Bad Ischl belies some dark blip of its past that in this town, the Austrian declaration of war against Serbia was signed which effectively ignited the first World War.
