The Independent Electoral Commission says it's ready to hold the 2021 Local Government Elections despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The IEC unveiled the municipal election campaign under the tagline, "Every Voice Together" - with a mobilization campaign aimed at encouraging eligible voters to register and participate in the elections, which are scheduled for the 27th of October. Voter registration has been planned for the 17th and 18th of July and it is estimated that some 15 million eligible voters remain unregistered. The unveiling comes at a time when some political parties have called for a postponement of the elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have also criticized the IEC for forging ahead with the elections before the expected release of a report by former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke into whether or not it is conducive to hold free and fair elections during the pandemic.....Ebrahim Fakir, Director of Programmes at the Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute (ASRI), chats to Sakinah Kamwendo on this.
