April 19, 2019 – Indigenous people from Alaska are traveling the country educating people about their way of life and advocating for the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to open drilling in the coastal plain of the refuge. Indigenous communities in the Southwest see mirrored efforts to protect sacred sites including Chaco Canyon and Bears Ears from development. A recent stop in Albuquerque focused on protecting the Arctic and beyond. Correspondent Antonia Gonzales sits down with Bernadette Demientieff, a leader of the Gwich’in people of Alaska, to talk about how allies from Alaska to Albuquerque are joining forces on the issue of oil and gas development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
