What is Christian libertarianism?
Christian libertarianism is a political philosophy that merges Christian beliefs with libertarian ideals, emphasizing free will, human nature, and God-given inalienable rights. It advocates for a legal framework limited to prohibiting actions such as assault, theft, and fraud, while leaving other moral disciplines to the church or, in the case of minors, to parents or guardians. At the heart of Christian libertarianism is the principle of non-aggression. This principle maintains that individuals should not be coerced into behavior unless they infringe upon the rights of others. Christian libertarians believe that commands such as "love your neighbor as yourself" should not be legally enforced if they do not violate the non-aggression principle. Andrew Sandlin, an American theologian, describes Christian libertarianism as granting maximum freedom to mature individuals under God's law. The concept of Christian liberty, or Christian freedom, is central to this ideology. Christians are seen as being liberated in Christ, thus free to serve Him. Lester DeKoster, a Christian thinker, highlights two aspects of Christian liberty: "freedom from" and "freedom for," with divine law acting as the pivot between the two. Divine law, perceived as stemming from a transcendent source such as God's will, is considered superior to human-made laws and is seen as immutable by human authorities. Christian libertarianism in the United States has roots in 18th-century classical liberalism and 19th-century individualist anarchism. According to economist Murray Rothbard, early libertarian experiments in the Americas were initiated by nonconformist Protestant groups. Martin Luther, a key figure in the Protestant Reformation, is described as having libertarian elements in his theology, though his use of the term differs from modern American libertarianism. Harro Hopfl, in his introduction to "Luther and Calvin on Secular Authority," notes that Luther's theology included libertarian, egalitarian, and communal themes. English Catholic historian and Liberal statesman Lord Acton argued that political liberty is essential for safeguarding religious liberty. This view underpins the work of the Acton Institute, a Christian conservative libertarian think tank named in his honor, which promotes the intersection of faith and freedom. Christian libertarianism seeks to harmonize the principles of libertarianism with Christian doctrine, advocating for minimal state intervention in moral and personal matters, while upholding the non-aggression principle and divine law as guiding tenets. It represents a unique perspective within the broader libertarian movement, rooted in historical Christian thought and committed to individual freedom under the sovereignty of God.
