UK Cities in Crisis: After Birmingham, a String of English Cities Face Bankruptcy
Birmingham, the second-largest city in the United Kingdom, went bust in September of last year. Unable to balance its yearly budget, the local government declared bankruptcy. To meet its financial obligations, the council announced cuts in services, asset sales, and raised taxes. In March, the City Council signed off on a wave of cuts to services. It plans to close 25 libraries, eliminate free swimming pools, and switch to fortnightly waste collection. However, it's not just a problem for one city. Eight English councils have declared themselves effectively bankrupt since 2018, including Woking, Nottingham, and Thurrock. Several others have planned major cuts in an explicit attempt to stave off insolvency. Earlier this year, a survey found that nearly one in 10 councils in England has warned they will go bust in the next 12 months.
