After getting many photos of RMR 613 throughout the Fraser Canyon from Lillooet to Pavillion, I continued on to the Cariboo in hopes of catching them in time at this priority crossing. While I had to stop to get gas in Clinton, I had enough time arriving at the crossing with around 10-15 minutes to spare. After hearing the familiar fouled K3L in the distance, the crossing activated, and RMR 613 came cruising through.
This crossing was a great one, and was one of my biggest priorities to record during the chase. It is a mid-1990s BC Rail gateless Safetran install with of course the original Safetran 8” lights replaced. While half of the installs during that time period received ASC E-Bells, the other half received Safetran Hybrid bells like this one. At the time of recording, this was one of only two crossings remaining on the former BC Rail (and in BC as a whole) to retain the Hybrid bells, the other being the familiar Cleveland Avenue crossing in Squamish.
Unfortunately though, sometime between my recording of this crossing and mid-2023, the Hybrid bell here kicked the bucket and was replaced. A visit to the crossing in 2023 by another railfan confirmed the Hybrid is now gone, having being replaced by a Siemens E-Bell like usual. As the bell sounded quite healthy at the time of recording, I believe the bell died suddenly due to a failure of either the solenoid or the relay. Many other Hybrid bells across the world are also dying because of that, which would make them very rare bells soon. If you have any of those bells close by, I suggest you get a recording of them as soon as possible before they’re gone.
