Sonic The Hedgehog on the Master System has a 'Bonus Panel' in Act 1 and 2 of every Zone. This is normally used to access the Bonus Stages, which require 50 rings or more. However, rings are also a requirement for gaining extra lives.The requirement varies from stage to stage, but finishing in a certain bracket of rings reveals a Sonic icon. This also works for the SEGA Game Gear version of Sonic The Hedgehog as well.
The only exception to this rule is Sky Base Zone Act 2, as there are no rings at all. Hitting the Bonus Panel will always reveal a Ring Icon, which gives an additional 10 rings for every multiple of 10 your ring counter is at. Green Hill Zone Act 1: Clear with anywhere between 11 to 19 rings.
Green Hill Zone Act 2: Clear with anywhere between 21 to 29 rings.
Bridge Zone Act 1: Clear with anywhere between 41 to 49 rings.
Bridge Zone Act 2: Clear with anywhere between 11 to 19 rings.
Jungle Zone Act 1: Clear with anywhere between 31 to 39 rings.
Jungle Zone Act 2: Clear with anywhere between 41 to 49 rings.
Labyrinth Zone Act 1: Clear with anywhere between 21 to 29 rings.
Labyrinth Zone Act 2: Clear with anywhere between 31 to 39 rings.
Scrap Brain Zone Act 1: Clear with anywhere between 11 to 19 rings.
