On July 23rd, 1983, Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767, ran out of fuel mid-flight due to a metric conversion error, turning it into a glider. Captain Robert Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal aimed for a decommissioned RCAF base at Gimli, Manitoba. Unaware that the runway was being used for a family event, they skillfully executed a "dead-stick landing." Despite the lack of hydraulic pressure and nose gear damage, they landed safely with only minor injuries during evacuation. This remarkable feat earned them the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Diploma for Outstanding Airmanship. The plane, known as the "Gimli Glider," flew until 2008. #shorts
