Whatsup dudes, just wanted to make a quick update video. As you know, I've been looking for new wheels and tires for the Shelby GT500, mostly for the performance benefit of better traction!
About two months ago I placed an order for a set of Vossen CV3 wheels and tires, but turns out it was out of stock and they don't even make the wheel anymore - shortly after I saw a motorcycle pop up on craigslist and I just bought that instead lol.
For those of you searching for better tires for your Shelby GT500, you might already know there isn't a huge selection available to fit on the stock wheels. My car has 20's in the back and 19's in the front, both are 9.5 wide. After A LOT of research, forum reading, and you name it, I literally spent months searching but I finally decided to get a pair of Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial II tires sized at 305/35/20 for the stock rear wheels. The original tires on this car at 285/35/20 in the rear, so these new tires are a bit wider and taller. I have seen others say they put them on this wheel, even though the manual calls for at least a 10 inch wide wheel (mine are 9.5), so I hope they fit and the dealership will put them on for me (we will find out in about 2 hours when I get there!).
Why did I got with the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial II you ask? Well, mainly because they were a drag radial that actually fit the stock wheel (almost haha). The second main reason is that they seem to have a unanimous 'best traction' vote across a lot of different forums with people comparing the popular similar/competitors of the Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial II, namely the Nitto NT05R and Nitto NT555r. I also considered the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires since they will fit the stock wheels on the Shelby GT500 exactly, but being just a normal street tire I figured they would not give nearly the traction boost as a set of drag radials.
The downside of getting these 305/35R20 Mickey Thompson ET Street II drag radial tires is that they are projected to have a short life span. So, YOLO, I'm going to enjoy them for the next few months of summer and see where they are at come fall, then take it from there!
With the new drag radials for the Shelby GT500 I expect to be able to get much better traction in 1st and 2nd gear, which is really all I want out of this car for the most part. I don't really drive it at high speeds too often, I love the thrill of the violent acceleration from stopped to 60-70ish.
Anyway dudes, I'll make some more videos of what they look like on the car, I'm expecting a more aggressive look with the meatier tire, and more importantly, I'll update you on the acceleration feel/times. Maybe I can get some more reaction videos going this summer! See you in the one!
