Josephson's tragic murder highlights the importance of safety when using rideshare services.
In 2019, Samantha Josephson, a senior at the University of South Carolina, called an Uber ride from Five Points. However, she mistakenly entered the wrong vehicle driven by Nathaniel Rollins. Rollins had child locks, preventing Josephson from escaping the back seat. He brought her to a remote location and murdered her.
Josephson's friends tracked her phone and reported her missing. Officer Jeffrey Kraft eventually identified Rollins's black Chevy Impala, and a search of the car revealed Josephson's phone and a pink keychain. Prosecutors built their case against Rollins using physical evidence from the vehicle, as well as testimonies from his girlfriend and others.
The Jury only deliberated for an hour and sentenced Rollins to life imprisonment for his heinous crime. Josephson's parents started a campaign, "What's My Name," to encourage people to make sure they're getting into the correct rideshare vehicle before entering and suggest checking the name before getting in.
