We can find the factors of 10 (ten) by carefully determining all the combinations of whole numbers that go into 10 without leaving a remainder.
One method is to start with the number 1 and then go through dividing whole numbers up to 36. When we do this we fine that 1, 2, 5, and 10 all go into 10 without leaving a remainder. Therefore, these are considered to be the factors of 10 .
The pairs of numbers that we can multiply to equal 10 are called the factor pairs. For 10 the factor pairs are (1,10) and (2,5).
Note that the negative factors of twelve would be:
(-1,-10) and (-2,-5).
We find the prime factors of twelve by further finding the factors of these numbers until we are left with only prime numbers. For twelve we find that 2 * 5 are the prime numbers of 10.
When finding factors is important to know your multiplication tables from 1 to 10. This makes the process much faster and less prone to error.
