A/Prof Stephen Bacchi MBBS, PhD, Associate Professor of Healthcare Systems at the University of Adelaide, Neurology registrar at Lyell McEwin Hospital (Northern Adelaide Local Health Network), Fulbright Scholar, Neurology postdoctoral research fellow Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, provides seminar on the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare.
Key cautionary themes include confidentiality, bias, hallucinations and confabulations, public perceptions, legalities, disinformation, accuracy vs effectiveness, frontline system considerations, unexpected costs, unintended consequences, dependency, quantity vs quality, medical reality, and captive markets. Benefits include improvements in communication and teamwork (such as relating to overnight medical emergency response – MER – calls), auditing (such as for blood products, including intravenous immunoglobulin or IVIg), screening (such as with image based analyses of electrocardiograms – ECGs), evaluation or classification of medical issues (such as penicillin allergies and intolerances), improving access to treatments (such as epilepsy surgery), and discharge planning (with the Adelaide Score). Approaches used in these applications include artificial neural networks, XGBoost, and large language models (LLM – such as LLaMA, GPT4, and Claude).
