STORYLINE:
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, in Paris on the last leg of his European tour, made an official visit to the Arch of Triumph where he laid a wreath of flowers on the grave of the unknown soldier.
He then met French President Jacques Chirac at the Elysee Palace and took part in a round table discussion.
The talks were expected to reinforce bilateral economic ties and seek cooperation on the North Korean nuclear issue.
Following talks, Roh was to lunch at the French presidential palace then dine later on Monday with French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin.
Meetings with lawmakers and business leaders and a speech at La Sorbonne university were also on the agenda.
Roh's Paris trip comes after visits to Britain and Poland, marking his first official trip to Europe since being elected in 2002.
He was accompanied by key Korean economic ministers and aides for the three-day trip that started on Sunday.
South Korea's presidential office said in a statement that Roh would seek to upgrade relations with France, "a key member of the European Union" that "has its own place in the world arena as an opinion leader."
South Korea hopes to enlist French support in international efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis, and boost cooperation in the information and technology sectors, the statement said.
