Is it safe to color my hair in my first trimester?
Your kid is not going to come out with super powers because you wanted to hide the gray.
I’ve heard it was dangerous.
There was a 2005 study that suggested hair coloring posed an increased risk of birth defects, but rat studies say everything causes cancer, though the reason we see greater cancer rates today is that we did not die of plague first.
I’m trying to stay healthy and avoid health problems.
Your body starts to develop nausea to avoid foods that can cause severe illness in the first trimester.
As if throwing up at the sight of tuna is any better than the food poisoning I could get from eating it undercooked.
If you are concerned about health effects, simply wait until the end of the first trimester, after which all the organs will have formed. And you’ll avoid the risk of the chemicals in the salon making you want to throw up.
Fortunately, the only thing that’s made me want to throw up is the butcher section of the grocery store.
You should be more concerned about breathing in too many cleaning chemicals than hair dye.
What can I do?
If you get a root touch up or root to tip color change, the dye is applied to the scalp as well as hair, so it can get absorbed by the body. If you want hair coloring done, try highlights, streaking, low lights or frosting that are only painted on.
Then those methods have less risk of absorbing the chemicals.
You can also ask them to pull your hair through a cap and apply the chemicals to the hair outside the cap, so the chemicals never touch the skin.
It is almost easier to let it grow out funny in that case.
So ask about safer hair coloring.
You already said it was safe.
Safe is a relative concept. Try one of the colors with ammonia free base or semi permanent colors that do not contain bleach.
They do fade more quickly.
Another month into the pregnancy, and you may be less sensitive to chemical smells and exposure concerns.
Or not.
So make sure you sit somewhere with a lot of ventilation so the chemicals do not bother you as much. And tell them you are pregnant so they use safer dyes.
You already told me about bleach and ammonia free ones.
Ask about vegetable and henna dyes to dye your hair instead of the chemical ones, if you really want to go all natural.
