Dyson, Bissell, and Shark have seized the vacuum cleaner market by offering bagless cleaners that purportedly avoid the waste disposal problem of bagged vacuum cleaners and deliver uniform suction even with a full dust receptacle. The reality is quite different. Bagless vacuums are dirty and non-hypoallergenic, and can be difficult to empty depending on what was sucked up into the receptacle. Suction uniformity is also overblown, as a jammed bagless vacuum cleaner is no more useful than a stuffed bagged vacuum cleaner. The cost savings of not having to buy bags is more than offset by the cost of having to buy HEPA filters for bagless vacuum cleaners, assuming that is even an option.
