Nightfall is about the events in the time of the Darkening of Valinor by the destruction of the Two Trees. These sat on the hill Ezellohar and brought light to the Elves and the Valar. That light was also used by Fëanor, son of the High King Finwë, to kindle the three Silmarils.
When Melkor saw the light of the Trees after his captivity and noticed the bliss and the beauty of Valinor and the Elves his heart was filled with envy and hate, especially Fëanor's Silmaril he desired most of all. Indeed he pretended remorse to the Valar under Manwë, but in fact he proceeded against the inhabitants of Valinor, above all against the Nordor, by mingling with them and exerting his corrupting influence.
When finally his lies were discovered he hid for a while, but soon after he visited Fëanor, spoke to him and offered friendship to him. But Fëanor saw his real purposes, cursed Melkor and shut the doors of his house in the face of the mightiest of all the dwellers in Eä.
In anger Melkor went to Avathar and looked for Ungoliant, a mysterious dark spirit in spider-form once his servant. Together they went to the Ezellohar, where the Two Trees stood. With his black lance he drained them and Ungoliant drank the blood. When the Trees were dead darkness and confusion overlaid all Aman and Melkor set out for the north. When he reached Formenos to steal the Silmarils the High King Finwë thwarted him. But Melkor slew him and robbed the Silmarils. At last he managed to escape to Middle-Earth over the icy Helcaraxë.
Fëanor vowed vengeance to Melkor, calling him Morgoth (The Dark Enemy of the world) and together with his seven sons he swor the fateful Oath, not to rest until the three Silmarils were in their hands and to make war on any who withheld them. He also used his power as new High King of the Noldor and persuaded a large part of the Nordor to return to Middle-Earth and to track Melkor.

----------
