Elephants are resistant to cancer thanks to having multiple copies of a gene called p53. This gene is mutated in many human cancers, and having multiple copies is like having several locks on your home door. If someone picks one of them, you still have other locks to prevent anyone from entering your home. Whales are also large mammals with low cancer incidence, but we do not know why. What we know is that the mechanism is different from the one described for elephants.
