STORYLINE
Members of Portugal's two main trades unions were picketing outside bus depots, hospitals, and waste collection points in Lisbon on Tuesday night as calls for a general strike from midnight began to take effect.
Metro stations shut their doors to commuters at 23:30 GMT, and buses ran a reduced service.
The strikers are protesting against a government budget bill for 2011, which includes a 5 percent cut in civil servants' wages, and a pension freeze.
Earlier bond market jitters shook Portugal and Spain, seen as the 16-nation eurozone's next weakest links, after Ireland followed Greece by accepting a massive international rescue.
Stock traders panicked and dumped shares across all sectors, sending Portugal's benchmark stock index down 2.2 percent by the close, while Spain's sank 3.1 percent to a level not seen since July.
The euro slid below 1.34 US dollars for the first time in two months.
European Union President Herman Van Rompuy insisted Portugal's finances are sound because the country's banks are well capitalised, they haven't had to cope with a severe housing market bubble, and the government has a strong program to bring the deficit down.
Wednesday's 24-hour general strike was expected to bring the biggest shutdown in public services in over 20 years.
