Malawi’s President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera welcomes the Thazima water scheme, which is a partnership between the Government of Malawi and Peace Parks Foundation, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through KfW, to supply clean drinking water to 33,000 people over the next decade! For communities bordering Nyika National Park and Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, turning on river-fed taps is a game-changer. Women and children who are responsible for fetching water, walking long distances to rivers and salty boreholes, and often encountering dangerous wildlife, can now focus more time on their livelihoods and education. Villages nearby to these protected areas have a renewed connection with, and investment in, conservation and its many benefits, including upliftment through nature-based tourism.
Together, the Government of Malawi and Peace Parks are committed to safeguarding Nyika and Vwaza and empowering people. The groundbreaking new co-management agreement to jointly secure the long-term protection and sustainability of these two areas reflects our dedication to harmonising conservation efforts with local development, guaranteeing a prosperous future for wildlife and communities alike.
Join us in celebrating this leap forward for the communities of Nyika and Vwaza, and for #NatureWithoutBorders in Malawi! Read the full story here: [ Ссылка ] - and watch to learn more about the scheme’s contribution to people and conservation.
