Mother Teresa, known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Born in 1910 in Skopje, now part of North Macedonia, she felt a calling to religious life at a young age and joined the Sisters of Loreto at the age of 18. After teaching for several years in India, she experienced what she described as a "call within a call" to serve the poorest of the poor. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a congregation dedicated to caring for the destitute and dying. Mother Teresa's work earned her numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She passed away in 1997, but her legacy of compassion and selfless service continues to inspire people around the world.
