October 2021 update - nearly 2 years later...
It's interesting to me how many negative comments I've received from people regarding this video. I guess it's easy to judge ones decisions after the fact from the comfort and safety of their cozy warm home. I wonder if any of those folks would have given a thumbs up to a video showing the flood that would have come next when the water pipes froze in the walls of my home. :-P
With that said, I 100% agree with the well intended and helpful comments posted by those with lots of HVAC experience that have offered appropriate words of caution and helpful tips for anyone that may find themselves in a similar emergency situation.
This fix may help or it may not. Any person trying the temporary trick I've shown here needs to think carefully about their actions and be ready for all the potential outcomes those actions may produce.
Also, I include basic troubleshooting steps to take before calling a professional HVAC person if the heater in your home is not working. In my case, after replacing the board and the gas valve, things still weren't working, meaning we were about to go into night number three with no heat in single digit winter weather.
Please note that this was an EMERGENCY situation and that I took this action after trying all other available alternatives AND after researching the parts / systems involved. I was also confident that I could quickly close the nearby gas line safety valve if needed. Additionally, I was prepared to leave the system in "emergency on" mode until my home warmed to a safer temperature had the valve remained open.
