This guitar technique for melody & solos is both a unique sound and one of the most interesting applications of intervals. While it is not difficult, it does require some practice. I’m going to show you how to do it step by step.
The technique is “String Skipping,” and it’s one of the best melodic soloing ideas you can do period. The sound is exclusive and its ability to build up your solos without requiring a ton of technique makes it ideal for soloing.
A benefit of learning String Skipping is how it produces a sound that is not offered by traditional linear scale lines. Functional melodic carryover makes this a superior choice when it comes to selecting a technique with a fresh sound. It is also one of the more under-performed techniques of many guitar players.
The tendency to compose lead guitar parts that apply string skipping is common among some of the world’s most famous guitarists. In fact, players such as; Eric Johnson and Steve Morse will use this technique abundantly.
We’ll start by learning an easy scale layout along with a string skipped melodic example. This will enable you to feel the string skip movement without having a play anything too complicated. The examples will progress from there to incorporate more string skip concepts with intervals as well as, triad chords.
