Finally arrived in the place I was most anxiously awaiting! The Whitsunday Islands. The speed boats whipped us around on a bumpy and fun ride to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to see. The clarity of the water wasn't great from dirt being washed up & a majority of the coral died from Cyclone Debbie. Then we stopped to hike up to the Hill Inlet Lookout to see our first peak of the magical Whitehaven Beach (the picture in the thumbnail is the view!). It's one of the most photographed places in the world. Next, we parked our boats at Whitehaven Beach to enjoy the sun and drinks on the softest sand I have ever felt. This was one of the highlights of the trip. We had so many laughs and really got to know some of our friends we got close with on the trip this day. We had a delicious dinner at our hostel when we got back after exploring the downtown of Airlie Beach. We went out to Magnum's at night, not far from our hostel. We were supposed to have a night out at the hostel's bar which we were told is to be the local's favorite spot to go out, but a tree fell through the bar during the cyclone the week before.
In the morning, we went on a booze cruise on a maxi yacht, aka a sail boat. We sailed out an hour to Hook Island from Peter Pan. We sang, swam, and got to know the other students on the trip a lot better these past two days. This was a highlight of my trip as well, maybe even a bit more fun than the day before. At night we drove up to Magnetic Island, or as the Australians say, Maggie Island. They shorten everything and it's so cute. I was a bit too tired to go out from two long days in the sun and got some rest when we arrived at the seaside resort/hostel.
We woke up to an amazing ocean view in the morning. This was the first hostel we spent two nights at and it was the nicest so far too. We woke up and had a free morning, which we were all looked forward to after looking at the busy itinerary before the trip. But when it actually came to it, we missed our 40+ group of new friends that morning. A group of us ended up taking a hike to a great view of the island. Then we hopped on a bus to the Horseshoe Bay for acai bowls and coffee. We found our tour guides & bus driver at a bar and stopped for a few drinks before dinner at the hostel. That night we had so much fun at the hostels bar again. We started out playing boozy bingo again and lead to a long night of dancing on the tables and singing our groups' favorite song Hey Baby! We ended the night hanging out on the beach. I didn't get much footage from this night, which I completely regret! By the time we got to bed we only had a couple hours till our 5AM wake up call to leave Maggie Island for our next destination. It was definitely worth it... and you will see it in the next vlog!
