Walter Isaacson tells about Albert Einstein and how his wife spent his money.
Albert Einstein won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. However, the story of how his Nobel Prize money was utilized is both compelling and complex. As part of their 1919 divorce settlement, Einstein agreed to give the prize money to his first wife, Mileva Marić. This arrangement was meant to ensure financial security for Mileva and their two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard.
Mileva used the majority of the Nobel Prize money to support their children. Hans Albert went on to become a successful engineer, while Eduard required extensive medical care due to schizophrenia. Mileva dedicated a significant portion of the funds to providing Eduard with the best possible care, a responsibility that demanded substantial financial resources.
In addition to addressing her sons’ needs, Mileva invested in real estate in Zurich, hoping to secure a steady income and long-term financial stability. However, managing these properties proved challenging, and the ongoing costs of Eduard’s care continued to strain her finances. Despite her efforts, Mileva faced significant financial difficulties throughout her life.
Einstein, recognizing the financial challenges faced by Mileva and their children, continued to provide additional support even after the initial Nobel Prize money was spent.
